The linear east-west form of the house was a response to the shape of the existing clearing in dense bushland near Ferny Hills, a suburb to the north-west of Brisbane. A central timber "lung" is the main organisational element of the house. This timber clad double-height volume opens up to the surrounding forest on both sides to create the public heart of the dwelling. It includes the fireplace, a raised planter, the staircase and a bridge link between the upper level sleeping areas. A clerestory window runs the length of the house, bringing views of the tree canopy into the level 1 spaces.
